History

The history of Heartland Lutheran High School begins in 1992 when a small group of people came together to discuss the feasibility of Lutheran secondary education in Central Nebraska.

After years of hard work, prayer, and God's guidance, Heartland Lutheran High School opened its doors for the 2000-2001 school year. That first year, classes were held at Peace Lutheran Church, Grand Island. The student body consisted of 5 boys and the staff consisted of Mr. Curt Fischer and Mrs. Jackie Zehendner. This core group chose the school's colors (red, navy blue, and white) as well as the school mascot (Red Hornets.)

The first building at the site of Heartland Lutheran High School was completed in March of 2001. The first building consists of four classrooms, two offices, a media center, two restrooms, and a faculty workroom. Today, this “east” building is used for many classes.

The third year of HLHS brought more "firsts". Luke Bremer graduated as the first Senior at HLHS. More electives were offered and more extra-curricular activities such as basketball, volleyball and mock trial were offered. With a growing student body and the addition of more athletic programs, HLHS needed to find places to practice and used a variety of sites in and around Grand Island.

In 2006 our new building that included classrooms, offices, and a gymnasium was finished and changed many ways of doing things at HLHS! It was a pleasure to have our own first-rate facilities that included new science labs, a music room, locker rooms and a great gym.

Throughout the first 13 years of HLHS, the school has faced many trials and roadblocks. Through each one—whether it is financial, facility related, or human—God has provided the answers to our needs. Many different students and teachers have walked these halls, and we rejoice with the 137 students who have graduated from HLHS. Although things have changed and continue to change, one thing that has not and will not change is our commitment to provide a Christ-centered education to high school students in the central Nebraska area. We continue to put our trust in Christ, that He will provide for our needs and give us the wisdom needed in the awesome positions in which He has placed us. What an incredible privilege it is to serve the students whom God has placed in our care!

We have room to continue to grow as our present facilities will hold about 125 students. We expect to experience growth over the coming years, but not to the point that it negatively impacts our close-knit relationships.

Heartland Lutheran High School is an “approved school” in the state of Nebraska, meeting and exceeding the requirements of Nebraska’s Rule 14. HLHS is a recognized service organization of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
