Quilts & Cars a Huge Success!

The inaugural “Quilts & Cars” event at Heartland Lutheran High School was a                                                 huge success.  Held on Sunday, October 4, the show featured 64 cars and 42 quilts.

Hundreds of people came to the event, ate delicious food, purchased goodies on                                               the cookie walk, bid on quilts through a silent auction, and much more.  It was a                                          cool day with just a quick shower, but it didn’t deter people from enjoying the live music from “Push to Exit” and the incredible cars and quilts.

Fourteen awards were given to car show participants with Best in Show and Best Interior going to Larry Phelps of Central City with the coral 1957 Chevy Bel Air.  The People’s Choice award and the Best Classic Car went to Lori McIntire of Grand Island with the pink panther 1973 Dodge Challenger.  The other big winner was Wayne Foster of Grand Island with the brandy wine 1951 Mercury Coupe.  He won Best Antique Car, Best Motor and Best Paint.

Eight awards were given in the quilt show. Irene Gruber of Hampton took the top honors, receiving the Best in Show award and the People’s Choice award for her incredibly detailed “cathedral window” quilt.  Betty Noffke of Hampton won for best small hand-quilted and best small machine-made quilts.  Vicki Bartels of Grand Island won best wall hanging or baby quilt.

The actual awards were quite unique with most of them being clay pieces created by Heartland Lutheran High School students.

“We were thrilled with the number of quilts and cars registered for the event.  We weren’t sure what to expect as this was our first attempt at this type of event, but we couldn’t be happier with the turnout,” stated Heartland Lutheran Executive Director Curtis Wudtke.  “We learned a lot and we are already looking forward to next year, knowing the improvements that we will make.”

The funds raised at this event go to support the Tuition Assistance Fund at Heartland Lutheran High School.  This fund supports families, giving those who have demonstrated financial need a reduction in tuition, making a HLHS education accessible to all.  Over 40% of the 65 current students receive tuition assistance.
