HLHS “Parent Pledge” Program
Heartland Lutheran High School is proud to be an illegal drug, alcohol and tobacco free campus and encourages our students to avoid alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs. Our parents generally share these values. We recognize that not all of our parents know each other, so we use this tool / program to help parents feel confident that their children are safe and free from these temptations in the homes of their classmates. We are not aware of any issues in recent history where any of these items have been present at a gathering hosted by an HLHS family, but we want to proactive in deterring the use and availability of such items.
Heartland Lutheran High School uses the Parent Pledge Program to achieve the following goals:
· To build a communication network to prevent the use of alcohol and other drugs among HLHS students.
· To host only Alcohol-Free, Tobacco-Free and Drug-Free parties and gatherings for teens.
· To not allow teens to possess or consume alcohol, tobacco or other drugs at their homes; and
· To discourage their teens from attending unsupervised parties.
By signing the Parent Pledge, parents let other HLHS families know that they intend to supervise their child’s social gatherings in their home to ensure that they are alcohol, tobacco and drug free. It also indicates that they may be contacted by other parents about parties and get-togethers. This pledge sends a clear message that parents/guardians believe underage drinking, tobacco and drug use is unacceptable. Please note that if a family is not listed in the directory, it does not necessarily mean they do not support the pledge. Only HLHS parents/guardians who have signed the pledge are placed on the list.
The Parent Pledge reads as follows:
I as a parent/guardian will make every effort to uphold the following:
· I/We will actively supervise all gatherings or parties of youth in our home or on our property, or ask another responsible adult for help to do so.
· I/We will not allow the possession or use of alcohol, marijuana, tobacco or other drugs, or violence by youth in our home or on our property.
· I/We will set expectations for my/our child(ren) that he/she/they will not knowingly attend a gathering where teens are consuming alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs and will leave as quickly as possible if they arrive at a gathering where such things are present.
· I/We will encourage open dialogue with my/our child(ren) regarding drugs and alcohol.
This pledge is NOT a legally binding contract, but rather an agreement between the parents who sign it to support one another and their children to maintain a safe and happy environment for education, growth and fun.
